josh brewster: maybe. but what worries me more is that over the past two seasons, carlyle has not developed a dedicated checking line. while i respect his decision to go with three scoring lines and an energy(4th) line, he’s better off with a top-six/bottom-six including a dedicated shutdown line. getzlaf and perry have been going up against the top offensive talents in the league for too long now. let those two top-liners feast on some checking lines more often. get the match ups on the road on the fly.
backcheck: from the moment our ducks won the cup the culture changed. we transformed from a team first organization to a me first collection of individuals. all of a sudden our guys weren’t playing for the respect of their teammates. they were playing, with the sole exception of teemu selanne, for the wrong reasons. frankly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], until a team first culture is re-established, it won’t get turned around. i’m hopeful, though.
q: following the cup win, with the exception of the stretch run and two playoff rounds in 2009, our ducks have been in steady decline since about march 2008. what in your opinion, will it take to turn it around?

josh brewster: better decisions in the salary cap age. andy macdonald and dustin penner subtracted while doug weight and todd bertuzzi arrived in return in related and unrelated deals, respectively, are just a few examples.
curtis zupke: they obviously have to build up that defense again. offensively, they need to establish a philosophy and somehow implement it. three scoring lines? two scoring lines and a checking line? there doesn’t seem to be much direction. in training camp carlyle and murray seemed to be saying, ‘well, let’s try this.’ in their defense, they have recognized this is a transition period. but really, the only way to get back on top in today’s nhl is to be aggressive in trades and free agency and spend to the cap, which is basically what brian burke did to get that cup in 2007.
curtis zupke: i think it has a lot to do with their style of play. during the cup years, they were tough in those cliché “dirty areas,” meaning the corners and in the crease, and that translates well on the road. these last few seasons they’ve really lost that and gotten pushed around. there’s been a lot of opposing players not paying a price in front of the net.
backcheck: our ducks don’t seem to approach road games with the same urgency. i don’t see the same hunger for that first goal. we’re simply not as aggressive on the road as we are at home. there is a definite deliberate or methodical style that looks like tentative play on the road but really isn’t. it’s thinking the play rather than just playing. it’s born of the fear of making a mistake and trying to make the perfect hi-lite reel play. when this happens, you tend to grip the stick a little too tight. you try to do too much and get too cute there.
q: our ducks disparate home?and road records of recent seasons seem to be continuing. any explanation? is ducks winning dependent upon coach carlyle getting the last change and favorable match ups?
